An Artist's Inspiration From Her Garden

By Cheryl Paton of Creative Brushstrokes, LLC

I have had both vegetable and flower gardens. I loved the idea of picking and eating fresh fruit and vegetables. But after several different types and locations of vegetable gardens, I realized that I preferred to let others, who enjoy the passion of working with the soil, to grow the fruit and vegetables. I am glad and appreciative to purchase their wares at the farmers markets and grocery stores.

I still have flower gardens though, and have learned to add fabric cloth and mulch to reduce the need for weeding. It allows me to 'enjoy' the colors more. I love all the different colors, and heights too, so that colors can compliment one another and can also create a blend of colors.

I love colors and blends, and get my inspiration for color blending in my art from nature. As an artist, I've read that pictures are more pleasing and unifying when colors are blended into other items in the picture. However, having observed nature, I've noticed that nature is not concerned with this at all. What is green is green. What is white is white. What is pink is pink. And so on. It doesn't matter what is next to it.

In nature, the only blending that truly goes on is when similar colors are near one another, and/or different shades of a particular color is in the same flower. Nature didn't seem to think that everything had to be blended so much to enjoy.

I've noticed that when I've been painting lately, that I no longer feel inclined to blend a unifying color in various items for unity's sake. Instead, I now take my cue from nature and my garden, and let the individual item stand alone, and be its own color(s). It is no longer dependent upon what else is in the picture or next to it.

Cheryl Paton creates and promotes good feelings with art. She paints primarily in acrylics and uses non-toxic acrylic and watercolor paints. People purchase her designs online at http://www.zazzle.com/CherylsArt*/

Thank you for sharing this color inspiration, Cheryl. I enjoy painting and also planning my flower gardens to provide color from April through October.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.
