Crossover letters Crossover letters are letters that sometimes act like a vowel, and sometimes act like a consonant. In the English language, the letter Y has been known as such a letter for a long time. When an instructor I had said that the letter W was also a crossover letter, I had thought, no way. However, it is true. Both Y and W are crossover letters. Just as the letter Y is silent in the word hay (acting like a silent E does), the letter W is also silent in the words flow, grow, and show. Another vowel type sound that the letters OW represent is the same sound that is represented by the letters OU in the word cloud. Examples are: allow, cow, how, and now. Just as the letters AU in the word August, act like a dipthong (a blend of two vowel sounds in the same syllable), the letters AW also act like a dipthong in the words saw, awe, awning, and shawl. Another example of the letter W being part of a dipthong is the EW pattern found in the words dew, flew, and knew. The EW in these words represents the sound similar to the OO in the word zoo. So now you know, if you hadn't already, that W also sometimes acts like a vowel.
