Inventiveness and Art
By Cheryl Paton of Creative Brushstrokes, LLC
Inventing art is making something that hasn't been made before. That is simple enough. But is it inventing just because something is made anew with brushstrokes or pencil marks, etc. No, it is not. If one is replicating something that has already been, then it is a derivative, and one uses skills to make a copy, so to speak. However, if that earlier something inspires a new idea, as with any other type of invention, then it becomes something new. It's no longer a replication, but an inspired piece. For instance, I used a photo of a fern that I had taken for reference purposes, and then I took liberties with how I wanted my fern to look in my painting. I have made designs completely from scratch, just by applying my learned skills to the task, and sometimes making up new skills to achieve a different result, as I went along. For instance, I had no idea if even various flowers even existed, or at least yet. It was so freeing to let the design unfold and then just to give it a name. I have also looked at and observed something, just for inspiration. My goal wasn't to make a replica in another form; however, just to use it as inspiration. When I have used this method of approach, I have gotten more wrapped up in to what I was making, and also usually enjoyed the outcome much more, than if I had just tried to make a replica, so to speak. Although, it might not be seen as truly inventing, I become freer in my approach and style when some inventiveness is involved, whether from scratch and/or using something totally as inspiration. As I see it, inventiveness can be totally from scratch, and also from inspiration. If you like, you can check out some of CherylsArt's inventive creations below.

Contributor's Note
Since making the blue lotus painting, I have found out that there is such a flower, called Blue Lotus. The actual blue lotus flower has more petals.

Thank you for sharing this inspiring information, Cheryl. Many times, we marvel at the art of our grandchildren, and don't give a thought to their inventive talents. Keep up the good work. Best to you. Frederick

That is so true Frederick; inventiveness does begin at an early age.
