Line Drawing with Watercolor Pencils
By Cheryl Paton of Creative Brushstrokes, LLC
Line drawing is such a versatile medium. Lines can be thick, thin, bold, wavy, straight, round, curved, zigzag, etc., and the combinations are endless. Line drawings can be monochromatic or a mix of colors. Shading can also be added. Another choice characteristic of a line drawing, is the medium itself in which the line drawing is done, and/or the mix thereof. One can use pens, markers, pencils, colored pencils, and more. The latest medium that I used was watercolor pencil on Bristol Vellum (paper). The watercolor pencil goes on softer than a hard lead, so you don't get real good hard lines. But you get lines with a softer touch. The lines are made darker by going back over the them, and varying the pressure. Turn the pencil sideways for a more shaded approach and wider coverage. Although the lines are softer with a watercolor pencil, they don't tend to smearing as easily as with a soft lead pencils or charcoal. I did place a clean sheet of paper under my drawing hand from time to time, however, overall the line drawing with watercolor pencils is a pretty clean drawing. One can begin with a line drawing using watercolor pencils, and then easily change the look by adding a little bit of water with a paint brush; if they would like more of a watercolor picture.
