Portrait painting in acrylic tip
Painting with acrylics is completely different than painting with oils. Oil paints can take up to six months to dry and so they have a lot more working time to blend. Acrylic paints dry pretty fast and need an extender or a sta wet palette to help extend their working time. That being said, I have chosen to work with acrylics. In acrylics, the base coat is usually applied first, and then successive layers. In portrait painting, I have based coated the skin in one of two ways. The first was by base coating in each color for that section of skin. Such as the cheeks being lighter and the side of the face being darker. Then when I went to add the second coat, my blending line was pretty much already determined by the layout of the base coat. The second way was to base coat the skin in the same color, but also painting in each shape separately. For instance, the cheeks and the side of the face, etc. would all be painted the same color. Then with my second coat, I would add the color differences. When I did blending with the second coat, the blending looked more natural. I had more room to blend and developed a softer transition area. |
