Thunder and Children
Has your child ever been afraid of thunder? How did you handle it? Did you try soothing them, telling them it would be over soon? Did you tell them the angels were bowling in heaven? I remember hearing that one myself. When I had my own young child, I did the soothing thing first, and that only helped in the moment until the next loud clash of thunder happened. In that moment I had dinner on the stove and didn't want it to burn. So my soothing impulse didn't last long and I wondered what to do. Then I had an idea! I decided to teach my child to make her own thunder. She was two years old at the time, and I sat her back down to the floor and told her that we could make our own thunder. "We can say boom, boom, boom," I told her. She said, "Boom, boom, boom," back to me. Then I told her we could even stomp our feet. So I stomped my feet and she stomped hers. And then I stomped my feet and said, "Boom, boom, boom." She stomped her feet and said, "Boom, boom, boom," and giggled too. She was happy making her own thunder and ran back to the living room to play. Then she taught her toys how to make thunder. Everything was calm and peaceful again, thunder and all.
